The first annual Metropolitan Reggae Music Awards took place on Sunday March 1, 1998, at the Crossroads Nightclub in Bladensburg, Maryland. The event was promoted by Tony Java and Must Jam Inc. and was hosted by a trio of WPFW radio personalities, Tony Carr, Ann Walters and Papa Wabe. The band for the night was DKGB, fronted by Willie Paul and Screechie Ranks, and for a first time event, the DC/Baltimore Awards function went very smoothly. [read more>>

The 2nd Annual Metropolitan Reggae Music Awards, rewarding the best in the business from the Washington DC area, takes place on Saturday March 27, 1999, at the Setting nightclub in Hyattsville, Maryland. Topping the list of presentations to be made will be the Reggae Lifetime Achievement award going to veteran Carl Malcolm. And among those scheduled to receive the One Love-Bob Marley awards, are Englishman, Mojo Nya, Scientist, Goldi Ichelle Cole, Tony Carr, John Blake, Neil Mattie, Sydney White and Dera Tomkins. And among those heading up the other 19 categories up for grabs are, last year's big winners DKGB and Willie Paul, Nikolai Monsoon, Third Eye, the Midnite Band, First Lady, Rawbom, Vicious, Diva, and Boxer. Cleveland 'Tony Java' Wedemine, 44, thinks reggae doesn't get any respect. Despite the fact that reggae has become a citywide turntable staple in recent years, branching beyond U Street and Adams Morgan, this burly promoter believes it needs a lift. So Java has decided to do this obvious '90s thing: He plans to hold the first annual Metropolitan Reggae Music Awards and Dance of Feb. 28. "Awards shows are done in every scene," Java asserts. "A reggae awards show has been done in New York, Chicago, and Miami. I think Philadelphia is doing one also. We have just enough support and entertainers." [read more>>
